The Delica team is proud to present the work of some of the first names of design in Spain. Today we want to introduce the work of one of our contributors, Miguel Ángel Ciganda, and its extensive career in Europe in the fields of industrial and interior design.
Miguel Ángel Ciganda was born in Pamplona in 1945 and began to develop his outstanding creativity early, in the field of photography. Soon after, he developed an interest in design and decoration and founded the now renowned decoration studio Miguel Ángel Ciganda in 1969. From 1984 on, he started working on industrial design projects, especially in the areas of furniture and lighting. Today, Taller Creativo Miguel Ángel Ciganda works from Pamplona, with more than 30 companies, on different projects in the fields of architecture and decoration, graphic design and industrial design.
His approach to the experience of designing is, above all, pragmatic and functional. Miguel Ángel Ciganda formulates his designs as architectural objects at the service of the architecture they inhabit, but always favoring function before form. He understands design as a collaborative process that brings together designer, producer and retailer, and he moves away from the general perception of designers as exalted geniuses alienated from the needs of the final users of the product or its manufacturers. However, he admits that he aims to imprint a recognizable and individual style in his designs to make a name for himself.
And if we talk about creating a name, this prolific designer who is said to prefer pencil to mouse, has largely achieved his goal. Thanks to his long and successful career and his personal style, he has become one of the first names of design and decoration in Spain. His interior and industrial design projects have won big national and international awards including the National Award ANECMO, the National Award AEPD and the first prize in the restricted competition to provide furniture for the Spanish pavilion in the International Exhibition of 1992. His Despacho Suso (Suso Office) was nominated for the Best Selection Office Design Awards by Norman Foster and the German Federation of Architects and his bench Compás has been selected for the permanent exhibit of The Chicago Athenaeum Museum of Architecture and Design.
